What?
A GPS navigation app designed to facilitate wargames scenarios. The app allows teams to organize GIS data privately and to receive mission updates from administration while also allowing administrators to know and respond to the movements of participants.
MiniMap Mobile App
The Ask
To help an airsoft field facilitate “Mil Sim” events that would include approximately 1000 participants spread across 50 acres of land. Enable the organizers to quickly adjust the quantity and location of points of interest on the field as well as to provide a broadcasting system to allow emergency messages to reach participants mid-event.
The Build
I conducted several rounds of rapid prototyping with the client to achieve an MVP that delivered the core requested functions with minimal cognitive load.
Rough Mockups
Using Adobe XD, I worked with the client to create a menu system that would allow both participants and administrators to access and modify event data in accordance with the roles the client wanted available. Once a rough architecture for the project was agreed on we moved on to polishing the interactions and menus.
User Testing
After a few rounds of prototyping, the menu system was ready to be broken out into a more high resolution prototype to be sent to a developer for execution.
MVP
User testing provided insight that allowed us to smooth out the experience and reduce operator error by a considerable margin. The program allowed administrators to quickly and intuitively telegraph key information about the event and usable space to field marshals and participants. Where verbal radio communication had previously been the quickest way to communicate, there was now a way to instantly share GIS data with participants.
After testing the wireframes and prototype were handed off to a developer to build out the product.
